CHAPTER 16

John led me to a small house on the lake that looked like it had been washed over many times. It looked like the house of Charlie Bucket from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. When I entered, I saw a pillow and newspaper. There was a fire going and a cooler right next to the bed. The bathroom was a little pit right outside the house.

“Well, what do you think?”

“It’s something!”

“Yeah, I’m sorry, my house got knocked down by another earthquake. I was blessed enough to recover a cooler.”

“Well, it’s better than living in a homeless shelter.”

“I wouldn’t say that. They have running water.”

“You have a lake.”

“They have food on their plate every night.”

“You have fish that swim in the lake. You also have deer and squirrels.”

“They have a place to sleep with real blankets.”

“You have the green grass that God made for man to sleep on.”

“They have—”

“You have everything you need right here. Be proud that you have a roof over your head, ground to sleep on, food to eat, and a Bible to read.”

“You’re right. Why am I complaining when I have everything I need?”

“So, where am I going sleep tonight?”

“Right next to me, if that’s okay.”

“But I don’t know you!” I protested.

“That’s okay,” he said. With that remark, I felt a little uncomfortable.

“I’ll sleep outside!”

“No, you don’t have to do that.”

“It’s my choice.” And we left it at that.
